There are many ways how a faculty or staff mentor will aid in a person's success at Iowa State. They usually know what a person in your situation has gone through and what you need to do in order to succeed without any problems. A mentor can be a vital asset to a students success at Iowa State.
One area of potential growth is being able to help me with interviews and prepare me for upcoming interviews in the future. There are many ways that a mentor can help me out in the future. They have been able to help me network with other professors and get my name out there for other people to notice. I've heard the saying "Its not who you know; its who knows you." and I believe that this is where a mentor such as a faculty or staff member would be able to help me out. Mentors can show you opportunities that a person otherwise may not notice or be able to find on their own. There are a few profesors that do research in my area of interest (agronomy) and someday I hope maybe to be somewhat involved in this and one way to do this is through a mentor or staff member and thats another reason why I believe a mentor is beneficial to a student at ISU. Another thing that I noticed is that some staff members even go out of there way to find internships for students in their intended area of interest which also can help a person out in the long run.
The one thing I look for in a good mentor is a person that who looks out for others well-being and even go out of their way to help a person. Overall a staff member or any kind of mentor is beneficial to a students career in the long run. Whether its help for a class or finding an internship, mentors are a great asset.

Blog Assignment #2

Before I came to Iowa State I planned on being involved in a club, but I had no idea that there would be so many different opportunities for me to become apart of. When I attended club fest I noticed many different clubs that had gotten my attention and others that I couldn't beleive there was even a club for. The one club that I thought I would like though was the Pheasants Forever Club.
Throughout my life I have always enjoyed being outdoors and hunting and other such things so I thought I would give the club a try. My choice to be in this club wasn't for academics, but for me personally. Each year the club host a pheasants forever banquet where they cook food and raffle off various items such as guns and whatnot. I was hoping to become involved in this and be able to help. Also, another activity that they do is a ditch clean-up and then have a barbaque afterwards.
I hope to gain an experience with just participating in the group and not just stand by and let everyone do everything else. I also think I being in this club will help me understand the different issues in the hunting environment rather than just hunting itself.
There are also many leadership opportunities in the ISU Pheasants Forever Chapter just like any other club out there. This year most of the leaders now such as the president, vice president, and the treasurer are all seniors and are graduationg this year so their postitions will need to be filled. Even if you aren't an officer, you can still help out with all the other activities going on in the club.
Being involved in this club could potentially help me get a job. Especially if I become an officer, employers like to see that a person has leadership potential and that could help me secure a job after college.
There are many various clubs here at ISU and I feel fortunate that I have a chance to be involved in any one that I choose. Clubs are a good way to get out there and meet people and also a good way to become involved.

Getting to Class on Time

Getting to class on time can be important for many reasons. The first reason is that so the class can start on time and so that the teachers and students can get things done that need to be done in class. Another important reason for getting to class on time is to make sure you dont miss anything important.
Overall getting to class on time is a very important factor in keeping up in class, but I think the most important reason for getting to class on time is so that we dont have to write posts like this.

Assignment #1

There has been many times in my life where I felt I tried my very best at what I was doing. I have lived on a farm all my life and was active in FFA throughout high school. Being in FFA brings about lots of opportunities where a person can compete in a contest and try their best. I was involved in one such contest where I thought I did my best.

My junior year in high school I was pushed by one of my teachers to be in a contest with three others on my team. The contest we were involved in wasn't one of the easiest contest where you could just go to and win. It took a lot of time and preparation in order to even place in the top ten. Not only did we have to study, but the contest was in the summer which made it even harder to want to study, yet somehow I was able to study.

The contest we were going to go to was a very complicated one. There were many different parts and many different areas that we had to cover. I didn't know much about the contest beforehand so I had to adjust to all the different materials and various ways of studying for contest. The closer it came towards the contest the more we were pushed to study by our teacher.

When the contest came around it was much harder then we all thought because we have never been there before including our teacher so we had to adjust quite a bit to everything. During the contest I made sure I gave all my effort in the hope that we would win the contest and in the end we actually ended up being state champions and were lucky enough to compete against the rest of the nation. This made me feel pretty happy that it wasn't all for nothing.

This contest not only gave me a good study habit and a sense of achievement, but it also helped me find what I wanted to do the rest of my life and now I am actually majoring in that area. I feel as though this contest prepared me for college because it took a lot of time studying for this contest and thats about the same as it is in college. Without studying you fall behind and you fall behind fast.

This prepared me for not only college, but also life in general in a way that if you put in the work and try your best at something, no matter what happens, you will get good results in the end. Overall, this little contest helped me in many ways in which I thought could never happen.
